1. Introduction
On 21 December 2018, the Chima Anyaso Foundation organized the Mega Empowerment Program, a landmark charitable initiative aimed at improving livelihoods and stimulating economic activity in rural communities within Bende Local Government Area of Abia State,
Nigeria. The program was designed to address unemployment, transportation challenges, and post-harvest losses faced by farmers in rural communities. It represented one of the most ambitious empowerment programs ever carried out by a private organization in the state,
impacting thousands of individuals directly and indirectly.
2. Objectives of the Program
The empowerment initiative had the following key objectives:
• Youth Employment: Create sustainable sources of livelihood for young people.
• Improved Rural Transportation: Enhance mobility of people, goods, and services within rural communities.
• Agricultural Support: Provide logistical support for farmers to transport produce efficiently.
• Community Development: Support traditional institutions, community leaders, and security agencies to strengthen local governance and safety.
3. Major Empowerment Items Distributed
Transportation and Mobility Assets
To stimulate economic activity and improve transportation infrastructure in rural areas, theFoundation distributed the following vehicles:
• 100 Motorcycles (Okada): Provided to youths as a means of livelihood and community transportation.
• 10 Mini Buses: Deployed for the transportation of agricultural produce and goods.
• 20 Toyota Sienna Space Vans: Allocated for interstate transportation services.
• Numerous Cars: Presented to traditional rulers, community leaders, and security agencies to support community administration and security.
4. Food and Welfare Support
In addition to transportation assets, the Foundation distributed essential food items to support families and households across communities.
Items distributed included:
• 5,000 Bags of Rice
• 10,000 Cartons of Noodles
• 1,000 Cartons of Tomato Paste
• 500 Twenty-Liter Gallons of Vegetable Oil
• Other essential food items
These provisions helped alleviate food insecurity and provided relief to many households
during the festive season.
5. Rationale for the Empowerment Strategy
Motorcycles for Rural Transportation
The communities within Bende are predominantly rural and agrarian. Motorcycles are the
primary means of transportation for commuters and light goods due to the terrain and road
conditions.
By distributing 100 motorcycles, the program:
• Created 100 direct jobs for youths.
• Improved mobility within rural communities.
• Facilitated transportation of people and small-scale goods.
Buses for Agricultural Logistics
Agriculture remains the backbone of the local economy in the area. However, many farmers face challenges transporting produce to markets, often resulting in post-harvest losses.
The mini buses were deployed to:
• Convey farm produce from rural communities to markets.
